Pepper Chicken (Kerala Style)

Ingredients:

  1. Chicken - 3/4 kg
  2. Ginger garlic paste - 2 tsp
  3. Onion sliced - 1 cup
  4. Crushed black pepper - 2 tsp
  5. Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
  6. Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  7. Coriander powder - 1 tsp
  8. Garam masala - 1 tsp
  9. Curry leaves - 1 spring
  10. Lemon juice - 1/2 tsp
  11. Salt - to taste
  12. Coconut oil - as needed
For marination:

  1. Pepper powder - 1/2 tsp
  2. Ginger garlic paste - 1 tsp
  3. Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  4. Salt - as needed
  5. Lemon juice - 1/2 tsp
Preparation:

  • Wash well and cut the chicken into medium size pieces.Marinate with the ingredients mentioned above for 1 hour.
  • Heat oil in  a non stick or heavy bottomed pan. Add sliced onion, curry leaves saute for 2 minutes. 
  • Next add ginger garlic paste. Mix well and saute again for 5-6 minutes.
  • Add in chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and garam masala. Fry for few seconds.
  • Add the marinated chicken pieces. Mix well, cover and cook in low flame for 5 minutes.
  • Add 1.5 cups of water , cover again cook in medium flame for about 20 minutes .Stir in between.
  • When the gravy reaches a semi thick consistency, add the crushed pepper .Open the lid and dry roast till the chicken  gets brownish.
  • Finally add  lemon juice and few more curry leaves.Mix well and serve.
